December Destination of the Month: Alaska

As mentioned, my favorite cruise vacation of all, and destination is, Alaska ! My first time there was in 1977, and my last time there was 2 years ago, and I’m already planning to go again in 2012. Why do I love Alaska ? I love the mountains. I live in Virginia, with mountains all around me. I love the snow on top. I feel, here in VA and in Alaska, it brings me peace and serenity. For me, if you get to see any of the animals in Alaska, this is just a plus feature. I’ve seen the salmon run, eagles, bear, moose, puffins, other Alaska birds, fox, deer, goat, and I’m sure others. I don’t feel Alaska is the same hussle and bussle, like going to the Caribbean. Though it can be cold, such as if, it’s raining, it doesn’t seem to bother me as much, as when it is cold in VA. For the most part, I’m onboard the ship or in a van or train, so if there’s any unpleasant weather, it can’t actually get to me. I love the trains in Alaska, but I love trains anyway ! The glaciers and the caving of the glaciers are fantastic. I love to shop in Alaska too ! I have throw rugs, salmon painted pictures, Russian dolls, Alaska jewelry, firs, and more. I’ve been to fish cooking classes in Alaska and I love to go up on the tram in Juneau and have Dungeness crab in their restaurant, looking over Juneau. I’ve been salmon fishing, and had the salmon mailed home. I’ve gone crabbing in Ketchikan, to include taking a tour on one of the boats from the show “Deadliest Catch”. I’ve been to Iditarod camps and ridden a dog sled. I’ve taken float plane trips as well as helicopter rides and landed on the glacier. I’ve paddled a canoe near a glacier, and seen the big tail of a whale. as close as 100 yards away. As those who are happy to go to the Caribbean every year, I could go to Alaska. If you've yet to go to Alaska ... Don't put this off another year. It's really worth it. Your Cruise Specialist, Vivian M. Webb.

A few of my Customer experiences in Alaska:

I loved going to the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau and the Red Onion in Ketchikan. After shopping, all our friends met there for a meal and drinks. Samantha L, Orlando, FL

My most fun time, was going into the National Park in Denali. So many bears that day. Olivia F, Augusta, GA.

I love all the fishing opportunities in Alaska. Gary N, Boloxi, MI.

Jewelry shopping in Alaska, like in the Caribbean, was the most fun for me. Kashandra L, Washington DC.

I thought I would only go once to Alaska, but like Vivian, I loved it so much, I have been 2 more time. The airfare might be a little higher going to Alaska, but the cruise itself, doesn’t seem to be higher than going to the Caribbean. I keep going back, because I’ve yet to do all that is available, like river rafting. George F, Charlotte, NC.

The picturesque views were everything my friends had told me it would be. Hannah L, Denver, Co.

I loved the trains in Alaska. Believe it or not, the different trails reminded me of the different train tours in Australia. Alfred K, Newport News, VA.

I think it is so great to go up to Alaska to see all the sites, yet not have to live as rugged, as in a tent, to do this … But instead, come home to my ship each night. Sarah M, New York, NY.

Call Today. Getaway in Alaska ! Ships sell out quicker than you think ! It's a popular destination. So many great deals. I found one for May 13, on Holland America for as low as $ 599 pp. I can't turn it down, I'm going. Will be my 12th time there ! Click title for details.

Why choose Adventures By Disney ? Insight for your enjoyment

Click Title for Adventures By Disney Brochure

So far … I, nor any of my personal customers have ventured though Adventures By Disney. I have many clients who love Disney World/Land products, and truly believe, if they want to see other parts of the World, leaning more about Adventures By Disney, might stir ones interests.

(added 12/23/11) An associate of mine, Michelle B of Fla, shared with me today: I have personally done Adventures By Disney Viva Italia and it was fantastic in every way. I then booked clients after my trip and they had the very best things to say. Disney may be but provides first class everything. Another associate, Peggy B of Massachusettes: I have a client booked to do Alaska this summer with her grandson. She took another Grandson on Tauck tours in Rome last summer. Tauck Tours have an excellent reputation. This year she considered both Tauck and Disney for Alaska.

I looked on line for some reviews and found this insight on All Ears Reviews.

* Adventures by Disney lives up to Walt's vision of providing a vacation that the entire family can enjoy together.
* Our adventure was truly an amazing (magical) experience, and a memory that we will treasure always.
* The red carpet is really rolled out !
* The tours went off like clockwork.
* As you would expect from Disney, all the details are taken care of for you. Ex. Bottled water and snacks when you need a little something; Ponchos if it rains.
* All the tours, meals and hotels were excellent
* The guides keep you very busy. There’s so much to see. There is some down time.
* The guides are fantastic. They keep you moving and kept us managed and coordinated.
* Most of the tours and events we did were private events, just for our group. Ex. If we were on a farm, there were no other groups there.
* I did not object to the cost. Though I knew Disney could be higher than many other tour company choices, for my family, I wanted to make sure, we would receive the same type of quality we receive when going to Disney World and with Disney Cruises. I believe Adventures By Disney offered us the most value with all the experiences and attention to detail, that they gave us.
* Disney recommends that you add on a day at the beginning or at the end, so that you have some time to do your own adventure. I too agree.

My recommendation from what I've been reading ... You won't go wrong with choosing an Adventure By Disney.

Why choose a Holland America cruise ? What Cruises Inc customers are saying:

I love the décor; The art onboard the Holland America cruises. We take at least one day of each of our cruises, to walk around the ship and try to see all there is. Samantha G., Colorado Springs, CO

High Tea time is the most relaxing for me and an opportunity for us to meet and visit with new travelers. Amanda C, Hollywood, CA

Though we have taken our grandchildren on Holland America, we appreciate that many of the guest are an older crowd of our same age and seem to be adverse travelers like ourselves. And they too, seem to turn in early, leaving the ship basically quiet for our sleeping needs. Mark F, Dallas, TX

When I think of my Holland America cruises, I think of my favorite dishes: Bolognese Spaghetti, salad bar, bread pudding, and ice cream at lunch. Some of these are also offered up till 11:30pm in the café. Marie W., Daytona Beach, FL.

We appreciate that Holland America is traditional enough to require dressing up on formal nights, not like other cruise lines who allow shorts. Fred S., Charlotte, NC

Years past, the service in the dining room was totally “white glove” service, like country club style. Holland America today, continues their great service, but it’s nice the staff can intermingle more and it not be as rigid for them now. Jack M, Philadelphia, PA.

My reason for choosing Holland America is it’s value pricing with their exotic destinations. We prefer longer that the 7-14 night traditional cruises and other than the Caribbean. Jeff N., Atlanta, GA.

I enjoy some of the game shows they offer, that’s usually available after dinner and before the nightly entertainment. These can be very entertaining, along with the anticipation of the added excitement these games can bring. Marion K, Biloxi, MS

I travel solo. I feel comfortable on a Holland America cruise. I meet so many nice travelers, bringing lasting memories, on each of my cruises. Harriett M, Boston, MA

10 Things to know about a DRA Dude Ranch

When I first entered into the travel industry, after recieving a "travel agent" certificate, 21+ years ago, I first went to work as an "outside travel agent" for a local agency, here in LYH (My time here was short lived, and I soon discovered I wanted to be a cruise only specialist, and discovered Cruises Inc). Anyway, while there, my first customer, who is still one of my "Top" cruise clients today (Linwood A, Lynchburg, VA), called me for a Dude Ranch. Just seeing this article, brought back memories.

Royal Caribbean International will mark another industry first with the introduction of iPad mobile digital devices in every stateroom onboard the newly revitalized Splendour of the Seas. The hottest tablet on the market empowers guests with an additional medium by which to receive, retrieve and use information on their cruise vacation. With a touch of the screen, guests will be able to access the daily Cruise Compass of events and activities; personal daily itineraries, including shore excursions; monitor their onboard account; order room service; view restaurant menus; access the internet; and watch movies. The iPads will be available beginning mid-February 2012 on Splendour of the Seas before being extended to all Vision-class ships when each undergoes revitalization in the following two years.

"Based on consumer research, Royal Caribbean is adding the iPads to greatly enhance guest communication, interactivity and to continue to offer industry leading technology that helps enhance the guest experience," said Lisa Bauer, senior vice president, Hotel Operations, Royal Caribbean International. "This is just one of the many exciting ways that Royal Caribbean continues to provide our guests with the ultimate cruise experience."

The iPads, which will feature English and Portuguese when they debut on Splendour of the Seas, will offer guests the opportunity to access all of their information not only from the comfort of their staterooms, but through the pervasive WIFI also being installed throughout the ship, which will enable guests to enjoy the iPads wherever they go onboard.

In addition to the iPads, Splendour of the Seas, which emerges from dry dock on Nov. 25, 2011, also will have an array of new stateroom amenities such as flat screen televisions, new bathrooms, and completely remodeled interiors, including luxurious new linens and furniture, as well as an additional 124 balconies. The ship also will be outfitted with the award-winning digital wayfinding technology that can be found on the line's acclaimed Oasis-class ships.

The newly revitalized Splendour also will debut new dining options including the Asian Izumi restaurant; the line's signature steakhouse, Chops Grille; the Boardwalk Dog House hotdog counter; the Park Café deli-style restaurant; and the exclusive Chef's Table dining experience. Royal Caribbean also will introduce a new à la carte menu in the Viking Crown Lounge that will offer guests the opportunity to enjoy bite sized portions of their favorite classics. Additional Royal Caribbean signature innovations debuting on the ship will be the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, a Diamond lounge, a Concierge Lounge, a Britto Gallery featuring works from Brazilian pop-artist Romero Britto, the new R-Bar as well as a reinvented Centrum experience.

Upon completion of the refurbishments, Splendour of the Seas will sail a trans-Atlantic voyage on November 25 from Lisbon, Portugal to her seasonal homeport of Sao Paulo (Santos), Brazil. MSC Cruises - Are they for you ?

Out of my 110+ cruises, I personally have not had time to yet try out a MSC Cruise.
However, had one of my Top Clients call (Jennifer S of Randolph, VA), after seeing a great sales offer, and wanted to try it.

She just returned. I asked questions.

How was the cruise ? Nice, fine, good, relaxing.

How was the food ? Probably not the quality of Carnival, but fine. They had steak, chicken, Italian, at ever meal. A variety. Buffets good.

How as the service ? Good. Room service good, however, room service menu limited, to include no fruit for breakfast. However, room service was prompt and friendly.

How was the entertainment ? She said, this is where she felt they lacked. Mostly singing, dancing, and opra. She said there was a large group onboard … A group of followers to a band. She said, they have private music for the group, and maybe this is why, there wasn’t more entertainment on their cruise. Their shows were not upbeat like on Carnival.

How was the ship (MsC Poesia) ? Very Nice, pretty, clean. Italian décor. Sort of dark; greys and blacks.

Would you do a cruise with MSC again ? Yes.

Would it have to be great pricing like this time, or are you willing to pay the same price you pay on other cruises ? No on paying same as other cruises; It would have to be same type low pricing as this one.

Do I need to jump up and run out and start selling them, or cruise on them first ? She said, cruise them first.

Any last words ? One must like Italian to enjoy this cruise.

Thank you Jennifer S, Randolph, VA

For those who have not cruised on MSC Cruises, they offer many great offers. Click title for current offers. Then call me to manage your cruise (434/800) 237-3832, press 6, then 61 if booking today or 62, just to leave me a message to talk

WOW, is this another “travel pyramid” - Rovia/Dream Trip Vacations ?

I was at a jewelry show, this weekend, in Gatlinburg, TN.
There was a travel booth.

Didn‘t listen to their full presentation, however, sounded like, you pay a membership of $ 199.00, then $ 54.99 per month. And of course, they promise, they have the best price vacations. Made me think of YTB. Also said, refer 4 friends and something is free (?).

I was amazed at the consumers listening to the presentation, but I really didn’t see anyone buy anything. It’s so sad to watch, people who could get pulled into a possible scheme. It's the sole reason I got into this business (and joined forces with the "true" largest distributor of cruises, for Best Price Guarantee) … To help educate and protect the consumer !

Please note, Best Prices, does not mean, better prices. It means, they can get the same rate as you calling the cruise line or tour operators yourself.
Best Price Guarantee, means, that you can’t call another agency (nor even the cruise line), and get a better price. Rovia's flyer, nor the presentation, said this. Unfortunately, the consumer is unaware of the difference in verbiage.

I decided to share this company with my associates this morning, and one of them shared back, a “complaint link“ of this company, which is exactly what I was thinking.
Decided to share with you. Click title for insight.

If you have a complaint of this company, please help other consumers, by sharing here.

Local Travel Agents telling twisted story in reference to Carnival Early Saver Rate ?

Talked with a local LYH person, whom I have been talking with, over last week, in reference to a cruise she wants in August of 2012. She proceeds to tell me, that I am asking, double the cabin deposit amount ($500), for the 7 night cruise she wants on Carnival, based on what another LYH agent told her of $250 (she mentioned a 2nd agent, but I don't really know what that agent told her).

These aren't the first time I've heard such twisted stories. Sometimes I believe the caller gets the info wrong and embarrased to call me back. Yet, other times, I have heard some true horror stores, with cruisers who have booked locally.

In reference to the Carnival caller ... The caller is planning to purchase a Carnival Early Saver Rate. The rules with having this rate, are many. First of all, to hold the rate and secure the reservation, you must pay the deposit in full, which is $ 500, for 2 people, on a 7 night cruise with Carnival, at time of reservation (To secure on day of purchase, this must be with a credit card). Second rule, this deposit is 100% non-refundable. Thirdly, there are no name changes. You can not fixed the spelling of a name, correct the booking to their real name, nor take out one person and add another persons name.

Sure, the caller can put down the deposit for only one person, which is $250, however, in return, the cabin becomes a single cabin, with this one person being billed "double" for the cruise and port charges (not double on government fees). Then later, a second person can be added with this second deposit of $250, and yes, the cost will then be divided in half. However, this was "Not" the scenerio provided to me, by this caller.

So what's going on here ? If the caller is telling me correctly, has the local LYH agent not explained to the caller, what only a $250 deposit will give them ? And again, what does it give them ? It gives them only one name to lock in for this cruise. It means the one person will show at a double cost in Carnival's reservation system.

Calling Carnival myself, Carnival claims, that when the second person puts down the deposit, the price will then automatically divide in half. Is that true ? Or, will the new price for 2 be what ever the new cost is, at the time of adding the second name and second deposit ? With this not being my customer, unfortunatly, it doesn't become my concern. Will Carnival offer this in writing ? No. If it were my client, as a National Carnival account, could I get this in writing, from higher ups, if in fact, this is true ? Yes, Cruises Inc could. Should, not having this in writing, concern the caller ? Absolutely.

Carnival Early Saver Rate is not something to fool around with, when one is 100% into penalty, at the moment of buying. And my recommendation, is to never buy a Carnival Early Saver Rate from the internet, not even ours, cause as mentioned, if you spell your name wrong, you are at 100% loss.

Just thinking of what could happen to this caller, if they go with the agency, which is only suggesting, to put down the deposit for one, literally sends me shivering. My first thought ... What if the second person decides, later, not to go, and now you can't go, cause you can't afford to pay double ? Well, guess the caller will be cancelling, and then loose this single $250 deposit. The magnification of what can happen, if a caller is told to wait on putting down the deposit on a 3rd or 4th person in a Carnival Early Saver Rate is trifold the disasters that can cost he caller ! Disasters raining on consumers, who do not know or haven't been told, scenerios of what can happen to them, happens way beyond how it is suppose to be, in this industry, if you're working with someone who knows the ropes.

Even the past 2-3 years, I've heard of local LYH agents who do not require the callers to put down the full deposit of their cruise, when traveling with a group. The $25 per person deposit, required by the cruise line to reserve space is for the agency to hold the space longer than 30 days. It's not the amount for the cruise to pay. Only a full deposit, guarantees the cruisers rate and space, so why "twist" the rules. And yes, there have been a few dissasters, here in LYH, per callers, the lack in deposit caused the group to loose their cruise ... Or ... The airfare or taxes went up on the cruisers ... Or ... No one in the group came up with the rest of the money to sail. What a "twisted" mess. I'm just shocked, these agencies weren't suide nor currently out of business.

Sorry, as an industry partner, all agents are here to provide clients insight that will not only benefit the client, but help protect them from the unknown and the unforseen (like the roommate deciding not to go or the taxes going up, or the fact, that the whole group might back out). The whole reason I brought Cruises Inc to LYH, 20 years ago, was to help callers from receiving misguided information. But sadly, even when you do share, callers will often trust their vacation with an agency that makes it all sound, "how they want to hear it". And like I told this caller, it doesn't change anything, just cause it "sounds" good to the ear, if your cruise is being bought under some "twisted" rules (by rules of the cruise line or just words you might want to hear).

Maybe in protection of this agent, maybe this agent just doesn't know where "twisting" can lead this reservation ? Or maybe this agent doesn't actually know the rules of these Carnival rates ? FYI, experience in this industry comes from many cruises sold and managed each year; It comes with years of know-how in dealing with these cruise lines; And it doesn't hurt, like with our position in the industry, to have a one-on-one personal National relationship when major issues arrise.

Long knowing, I can't call myself a true "sales person" in the travel industry. Meaning, I won't choose to sell snow to an eskimo, unless I first make sure the caller knows the full truth. For me, it's not worth getting a sale, if I must first "twist the rules", then later, have to figure out how to get out of this mess (To include, my company, nor the cruise line standing behind me, cause I knew better). Momentarily a sale may benefit someone, but in the long run, it can come back and hurt everyone, to include the agent who did the "twisting".

Sincerely, Vivian M Webb, CLIA Master Cruise Specialist

In 1991, there were 2 hurricanes in Bermuda in the month of September, just after I first got into the cruise business. I had 2 cruises planned, to Bermuda, that same September. Would you believe, my 2 weeks missed both the hurricanes ! I do remember, that one of Royal Caribbean ships (maybe the Nordic Empress), received a lot of damage due to one of these hurricanes in September. I remember the story being told, was that a Celebrity Cruise Line ship (maybe the Meridian), sailed near by this RCI ship, in case the ship and her guest needed help.

Have you ever been near a hurricane, while cruising ? Please share your story.

Have you experiences any of the travel venues that won in the 2011 Travel and Leisure Awards for ...

It's always exciting to learn which travel venues win the travel awards each year.

Since most my life is aboard a cruise ship, the opportunity to stay in hotels and resorts, do not often come my way. However, in my 113 cruises ...

I've been to Santorini, Greece with a non-name brand Tour Operator, no longer in business (biggest reason to by Trip Cancellation Insurance which covers bankruptcy of a carrier!). Many pictures you see of Greece are showing a picture of Santorini. With the sun in the background and the houses against the side of the mountain. Residents actually must walk to get to their homes, because it's only a small cement path and no rodes. They actually have a jonnie house, at the front of the walk, because the walk is very far for the person who lives at the very tip.

I have been to Bali on a Royal Caribbean cruise, about 10 years ago, for 2 weeks, which also includes Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Rice fields and personal home temples were of high scenery here.

I did take a 2 week cruise of Australia and New Zealand, however, I did not take the extra time to go to the Great Barrier Reef.

And of course, I have been many times to the Caribbean and Bahamas, with 5 times to Bermuda and 4 times to Hawaii's Big Island.

Which of the below have you had the opportunity to experienced ? What did you like most or least ?

5 World Heritage Sites You Should Visit in China

One place I've yet to travel to, is China. I marvel in the idea of getting there some time in the near future. I have several Cruises Inc associates and cruise customers who have been there, and they've told me they were thankful for the memories and the sights to be seen. I ran across this article on TravelHoppers by Cheryl Probst (click title). This article provides great information to hold onto, for anyone preparing to travel to China. My biggest desire is to see the Great China Wall and cruise down the Yangtze River (see pictures). Have you ever wanted to see China ? If so, what is your dream adventure.

The official website for China National Tourist Office (Toronto, Canada) offers additional information on things to know and things to do, along with a shopping guide.

My top river picture is of Yangshuo, China. In the China Travel Guide, I learned that Yangshuo lies in the northeast of Guangxi Province and to the southeast of Guilin City. The ethnic minority groups including Hui, Zhuang, Yao and others, enriches cultures for their various festivals. Yangshuo also attracts tourists with its delicious specialty foods, such as Beer Fish, Niang dishes and special snacks including rice noodles and various glutinous rice cakes. You can taste them in most streets of the county. The local specialties such as the Shatian Shaddocks, the kumquats and the Chinese chestnuts is noted for being worth tasting as well. If you want to buy some souvenirs, it's suggested to look for their painted fans, embroidered balls, and painted shirts. These can be purchased in the tourist spots and in the malls of the county.

I love the picture. Very enticing and soothing. What do you think ? Worth visiting for you ?

My dog of 15 yrs had to be put to sleep today

My dog of 15 yrs, Cocoa, had to be put to sleep today. He had lost the sense, over 6 months ago, to go out side to the bathroom. He lost use of his back legs from time to time. The seizures became big this week, and he stayed at vet or the Emergency hospital, except last night, when we thougt they were under control. But he was up 2 times and went all over himself, since he was no longer standing up (drowsiness from meds)(had to have baths). The Dr said this morning, his quality wouldn't get any better, and maybe it was time. I made the decision when he had that next seizure at 9am. I could have been a brain tumor.

I originally got him, after about a year old, hanging out at my mom's (and other neighbors) ... It was one freezing New Years night, and I couldn't stand it anymore. My dad has told him through the years, that he definately led the life of luxury ! Air condition home ... water bed ... all the girls at the vet who loved him when I was cruising !! Special dog food and treats ! You name it !

WILL MISS HIM ! He has been a lot of work for the last 6 months, and expensive for 15 years, but that little tail wagging will be missed more than I thought it would be, especially when reality sets in !

No more pets, so please, no one try to talk me into this again !!

The new smoking policy will be rolled out in two stages:

Effective June 15, 2011, cigarette smoking in public areas will be permitted only in Carnival¿s dance clubs, designated areas within the casino and casino bar, certain sections on the open decks on all vessels and also in the jazz clubs on 13 Carnival ships. The 13 ships include Carnival Destiny, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Victory, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, and Carnival Splendor. Cigar smoking will also be permitted in the jazz clubs. On other vessels in the fleet, cigar (and cigarette) smoking will also be permitted in designated areas on deck.

Effective December 1, 2011, smoking will be prohibited in all guest staterooms. Those guests in balcony accommodations will be permitted to smoke cigarettes and cigars outside on the balcony. Spa staterooms, currently featured on Carnival Splendor, Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic, will continue to remain entirely smoke-free, including on the balconies.
